More Than a Game: Alvernia’s Summer Showdown Brings Youth Basketball Community Together
READING, Pa. | What started as a summer basketball tournament series quickly became something much bigger at Alvernia University’s Plex.
This summer, young basketball players from across the region gathered for the Alvernia Youth Basketball Summer Showdown 3v3 Tournament Series, an event created to raise money for both the Alvernia University Women’s and Men’s Basketball programs while giving local youth an opportunity to compete, make new friends, learn from college coaches and players, and simply spend more time doing what they love: playing basketball.
Girls 3v3 Night
With fast-paced 3v3 games, championship opportunities, music, food, prizes, college athletes on the sidelines and plenty of energy inside the Plex, the Summer Showdown brought together players and families from throughout Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, Chester and surrounding counties.
But the most meaningful part of the summer may not have been what happened on the scoreboard.
It was what happened between the games.
For Alvernia Women’s Basketball Coach Rayne, creating those connections between the university and the area’s youngest basketball players was one of the most important parts of the experience.

“Connecting with the young players in our community is so important to our program. We were excited to introduce young basketball players throughout Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon and Chester Counties to the amazing community that basketball creates. The connections, the friendships, the challenges, the growth, the encouragement and the mentorship were all created under one roof with the same passion: basketball. That is priceless.” -Coach Rayne
Rayne mentioned that this foundation of collaboration with the local youth basketball players will lead to additional opportunities throughout the year to keep her student-athletes connected to the youth in our community, it provides my Alvernia student-athletes an opportunity to remember where their own basketball journeys began.
“Having our college players involved in our youth community gives them a chance to remember how their own careers began and the people who encouraged them along the way. Now they get to be that inspiration for another generation of young players. That is something really special.”
That connection between generations was one of the defining themes of the Summer Showdown.
Alvernia Men’s Basketball Head Coach Jason O’Connell, who joined the university in 2026, saw the tournament series as an opportunity to meet not only young players, but also the local coaches who are working year-round to create opportunities for them.
“Heading into my first year leading the Men’s Basketball program at Alvernia, it’s really important that we build strong relationships within our community and use basketball as a platform to make an impact. Getting the chance to meet local youth coaches who care so much about creating opportunities for kids in our community was really special. These coaches are constantly finding ways to give local kids opportunities to compete, build memories, and grow both on and off the court. We want to do whatever we can to support them and be a resource for basketball in our community.” Coach Jason O’Connell

A Summer of Competition, Color and Community
The Summer Showdown was also a true community collaboration.
Do It Local Berks (Custom Logoed Products Company) was proud to help bring the tournament series to life behind the scenes, assisting with communication and helping create some of the most recognizable pieces of the Summer Showdown experience, including the now-famous Summer Showdown Championship Rings and the bright, fun neon tournament T-shirts that filled the Plex throughout the summer.
The colorful shirts became more than tournament apparel. They became part of the atmosphere, helping turn the courts inside the Plex into a sea of neon as players competed, families cheered and championship teams celebrated.

And, of course, the championship rings gave young players something tangible to take home as a reminder of their accomplishment.

For a youth athlete, those little things matter.
They become the stories they tell at school.
The pictures they save.
The shirt they wear again and again.
And the ring that reminds them of the summer they played, competed and grew with their friends.
Basketball creates friendships that last well beyond the court.
When the Tournament Becomes a Community
For Twin Valley Youth Basketball, the Summer Showdown became a summer tradition.
Coach Tobey Green brought teams from Twin Valley to participate in multiple divisions throughout the series and said the players quickly became invested in the experience.
“Twin Valley had teams participating in several different divisions throughout the Summer Showdown, and our players are still talking about how much fun they had. They are already looking forward to the next opportunity to come back, compete and hopefully earn another championship ring.”
But for Green, the biggest win was the connection her players made with the Alvernia basketball program.
“I can’t thank Coach Rayne enough for the commitment she has shown to our young girls. The opportunity to play in these tournaments gave our players a chance to compete, but it also helped them build a connection with a college basketball program and see what is possible for them in the future.”
That relationship is already continuing beyond the tournament.
Following the Summer Showdown, Coach Rayne will be speaking at Twin Valley Youth Basketball Camp, giving the young athletes another opportunity to learn from her and reconnect with someone they came to know through the tournament series.
“Having Coach Rayne come speak at our camp means even more to our girls because they have already met her, played in her tournament and experienced the energy she brings to youth basketball. They are excited to see her again, and we are incredibly grateful for that connection.”
For Green, that is exactly what youth basketball should be about.
Creating opportunities today that can have an impact long after the final whistle.

Building Something Beyond the Court
The Summer Showdown was designed to give young players an opportunity to play multiple 3v3 games in a high-energy environment while introducing them to the Alvernia basketball community.
The tournament format also created something that traditional full-court basketball sometimes cannot: players were constantly involved.
With fewer players on the court, there was nowhere to hide. Every pass mattered. Every defensive possession mattered. Players had to communicate, make decisions, encourage one another and find ways to contribute.
And between games, there were opportunities to watch and interact with Alvernia coaches and student-athletes.
The result was a basketball environment where a young player could spend the day competing with friends and then turn around and learn from a college basketball player who once stood in exactly the same shoes.
That is the kind of connection Alvernia hopes to continue building.

For the young athletes participating, the tournament series provided something that can be difficult to find during the summer: meaningful competition combined with an environment centered around encouragement and connection.
Coach Dr. Nate Tiedeken, MD, Integrated Surgical Specialist, brought two teams to each month’s tournaments and watched that unfold firsthand.
“The best encouragement comes from teammates. This summer, I saw players from each of my teams step up their game to the next level. Most of all, I was blessed to witness friendships grow deeper and see their passion for my favorite sport continue to grow.”
Tiedeken said the value of the tournament extended well beyond basketball.
“Thank you to Coach Rayne and Coach Jason for creating this amazing opportunity. Keeping kids active during the summer and helping them make healthy choices is so important. These are the kinds of experiences that help create good habits as kids continue to find their way in life.”

A Community United by Basketball
For the families who filled the Plex, the Summer Showdown was a chance to keep kids active, competitive and connected during the summer months.
For youth coaches, it was another opportunity to put their players in situations that challenged them.
For Alvernia’s coaches and college athletes, it was an opportunity to give back to the community that surrounds the university.
For community partners like Do It Local Berks (Custom Logoed Products Company), it was an opportunity to help create an experience that young athletes and their families will remember.
And for the players, it was basketball.
Lots of basketball.
But perhaps the most important lesson from the summer was that youth sports are rarely just about the sport itself.
They are about the teammate who encourages you after a missed shot.
The coach who sees something in you before you see it yourself.
The new friend you meet on another team.
The college player who takes a few minutes to give you advice.
The challenge that makes you work harder.
The confidence that grows one game at a time.
And the realization that the basketball community is much bigger than the four lines surrounding a court.
The Alvernia Summer Showdown brought all of those pieces together under one roof.
